Why We Love Monrovia

Share Your Love

I’m a born and raised Monrovian

Q: Please tell us a little bit about your origin story. Where were you born and did you grow up here? Share a little about your childhood and your family.
I was born at Pasadena Saint Luke’s hospital. I was the fourth of four brothers and one sister. We went to Immaculate Conception school. I attended Clifton Middle School then Monrovia High School.

Q: Please tell us about your current, past, or future career. What do you love most about what you do?
I’m a retired Operating Engineer.  I ran heavy equipment for a foundation drilling company. My greatest love of my work was working outdoors. I’ve never had to sit behind a desk. On of my more rewarding jobs was the rebuild of the 5 and 14 freeways after the 1994 Northridge earthquake.

Q: What are a couple of your favorite restaurants in our community?
Copper Still, Jake’s, Max’s.

Q: How long have you lived or worked in our community? Tell us about your favorite memory or experience living in Monrovia.
I’ve been in Monrovia from day one. One of my memories are the wonderful summer recreation programs. I went to Mayflower, but all the schools had the program. During the summer you would earn “lucky bucks” for doing different tasks or helping out. At the end of the summer, all the school would go to a big carnival at Library Park to spend your Lucky Bucks. What a memory.

Q: None of us are able to achieve success without some help along the way. Is there a particular person you’ve met here in our community who helped you get to where you are or inspired you?
Peter Ostrey. He inspired me by instilling in me that I could be whatever I wanted, just give it the effort!

Q: If you could travel anywhere in the world right now, where would it be and why?
Anywhere you could view the Aurora Borealis!

Q: What is one of your favorite movies of all time? Do you have a favorite TV show or shows?
Illustrated man. Dragnet.

Q: What advice would you give to people? Do you have a Life Lesson quote?
I’ll quit when I stop learning or when it’s no longer fun!

Q: What is something on your bucket list?
Tour all fifty states.

Q: What is your go to band when you can’t decide what music to listen to?
John Hammond.

Q: What current or former local business makes you the most nostalgic about our community?
Perspective, Bruno’s Sandwich Shop, the Continental restaurant, Buzzy Bees, Toy Haven.

Q: If you could choose anyone that is alive today and not a relative, with whom would you love to have lunch? Why? And where locally would y’all meet for this lunch?
George Hill and we’d go to Monrovia Canyon falls for a bag lunch!

Q: What is your favorite thing about Monrovia or something unique about our community that you like?
Over the years I would say our community leaders who had the foresight to turn the local foothill land into a wilderness preserve and not new tracts of homes! Monrovia has always been about community

Q: Sometimes our mistakes can be our greatest teachers. Can you share a story about the funniest mistake you’ve ever made?
Don’t hit the back button lol.

Q: Even for friends or family, what is something interesting that most people don’t know about you?
I’m pretty good on a sewing machine, I can build leather purses and saddlebags! I grow a mean vegetable garden.

Q: What is the most beautiful place you have ever been?
One of many hikes. Into the Grand Canyon to Vaseys Paradise, or hike to Big Whitney Meadows in the High Sierra.

Q: What do you consider your greatest achievement?
Making retirement, my children and grandchildren.

Q: What would you rate a 10 out of 10?
The direction the city of Monrovia is headed! I see a great future.

Q: Who inspires you to be better?
My grandchildren.

Q: If you could inspire a movement that would bring the most amount of good to the greatest amount of people, what would that be?
To love our fellow man and judge only by the content of their character and not the color of their skin!

Q: Finally, what three character traits come to mind when you think of your success in life?
Hard work, always arrive early, give it 110% effort.

The best way I know how to start this is sharing a few of my favorite things:  I love to run outside. give dogs hugs and kisses (well really all animals). I love to laugh and make people smile. I love to read a good book under my tree in my back yard by my pool. I love being a wife and mother. I love my family. I love music of all kinds. I love great meals with my friends. I love the people that I work with. I love a bright sunny day! I love this community. I love that you can walk down Myrtle and have a great night and see friends.

Q: Please tell us a little bit about your origin story. Where were you born and did you grow up here? Share a little about your childhood and your family.
I was born in Downey, CA. I grew up in the City of Commerce and lived there from birth until I was 18. I am the youngest of five kids. I have one brother and three sisters. I went to elementary and middle school in East LA, graduated from Montebello High School, and then graduated from BIOLA University. I am an L,A. kid.  Growing up, I loved going to Dodger games with my dad and going out to dinner with the family on Sundays. I am half Mexican and half Caucasian, so that means that I got to experience both cultures, and that made birthdays and family reunions really fun. My maiden name is Gutierrez. I was the first one in my family to move to Monrovia and now my parents and two sisters also live in this great city.

Q: Please tell us about your current, past, or future career. What do you love most about what you do?
I am the CEO of the Arcadia Chamber of Commerce. What I love most about what I do is helping business owners in the community grow their business. When I can see that I have helped them in some way, it brings me joy. When I can look around a room of business owners/managers networking, it makes me smile. I have worked in the non-profit industry for 26 years now, and helping people in different communities is what I love. I came to the city of Monrovia 18 years ago to work at the Santa Anita Family YMCA.

Q: What are a couple of your favorite restaurants in our community?
The Derby, Bella Sera, and Max’s Mexican Cuisine

Q: How long have you lived or worked in our community? Tell us about your favorite memory or experience living in Monrovia.
I came to work in Monrovia over 18 years ago, and I have lived here for ten years. When I worked for the Santa Anita Family YMCA, we partnered with the city to plan the annual Healthy Kids Day Easter egg hunt. I have wonderful memories of this event because it was a day of all the hard work coming together. It was community coming together, and the kids were also so happy. I love that part of Monrovia. It is a community that has fun together.

Q: None of us are able to achieve success without some help along the way. Is there a particular person you’ve met here in our community who helped you get to where you are or inspired you?
No one is able to achieve success without help, and there has not been just one person. As I have grown in my community, there have been a lot of people who have helped me see that we all have a place here in Monrovia.

Q: If you could travel anywhere in the world right now, where would it be and why?
I would buy an Airstream and travel across the United States and visit all the Baseball parks. I am looking forward to retiring and starting this adventure. There are lots of Hot Dogs, Peanuts and Cracker Jacks to taste.

Q: What is one of your favorite movies of all time? Do you have a favorite TV show or shows?
Favorite movie of all time is High Society. It stars Frank Sinatra, Grace Kelly, and Bing Crosby. I love the music in this movie. Favorite TV shows are I Love Lucy, Friends, and The Big Bang Theory. All three shows make me laugh.

Q: What advice would you give to people? Do you have a Life Lesson quote?
Advice that I would give people is to write down five things a day that you are grateful for. It really helps change how you look at the world around you. The life lesson quote my husband taught me is: “The number one rule is don’t panic.”

Q: What is something on your bucket list?
Something on my bucket list, which is similar to where I would travel is I would love to buy an Airstream and drive to different spots to run half marathon races.

Q: What is your go to band when you can’t decide what music to listen to?
It’s not really a band, it is a person – Dolly Parton.

Q: What current or former local business makes you the most nostalgic about our community?
Former business that makes me most nostalgic about our community is The Dollmakers/Kattywompus. Pam Fitzpatrick taught me a lot about running a small business and working with the community during good times and bad. It was also fun to go in there and shop. I still have Old Town Monrovia socks I bought there. She taught me to love Old Town Monrovia.

Q: If you could choose anyone that is alive today and not a relative, with whom would you love to have lunch? Why? And where locally would y’all meet for this lunch?
It would be Fernando Valenzuela and we would meet at Max’s Mexican Cuisine for lunch. I love that era for the Dodgers, and I would love to sit and just listen to his stories about the team, the players and LA at the time.

Q: What is your favorite thing about Monrovia or something unique about our community that you like?
I love to run outside, and my favorite thing about Monrovia is that you can run and see beautiful wildlife, stop and talk to friends, say hello to neighbors and get home safe. Thanks Monrovians for all the smiles and waves.

Q: Sometimes our mistakes can be our greatest teachers. Can you share a story about the funniest mistake you’ve ever made?
I wish I only had one story. In my job at the Arcadia Chamber, I am in videos all the time about community businesses and restaurants. I am always making mistakes and they are caught on tape. So I have learned to laugh at myself and just post blooper videos. It makes others laugh, and now when I make mistakes I just think “well its a good one to go on the blooper real”

Q: Even for friends or family, what is something interesting that most people don’t know about you?
I have run eight half marathons and thirteen 5k races.

Q: What is the most beautiful place you have ever been?
Paso Robles sitting in the vineyards on a beautiful sunny day.

Q: What do you consider your greatest achievement?
Raising my wonderful daughter.

Q: What would you rate a 10 out of 10?
Anything that my husband makes on his smoker for a dinner at home with friends.

Q: Who inspires you to be better?
My family. When there is something new or hard, I know I can grow and change because we share about what we have learned and support each other.

Q: If you could inspire a movement that would bring the most amount of good to the greatest amount of people, what would that be?
It would be a “Be Positive” movement. It is so easy to be negative about the community or world around us. Let’s work on being grateful and positive. The goal would be that every time you said a negative thing you would need to say a positive thing. We can change the community with our positive and encouraging words, even if we don’t like some things.

Q: Finally, what three character traits come to mind when you think of your success in life?
Love, Joy, gratefulness

My name is Beth Moser-Chang, and I am originally from Louisville, Kentucky. I moved to Los Angeles in 2005 from NYC to look for photo work. In 2006, after working for a portrait company, I started my own photography business. I am married to my husband, Joe, and we have two really rad kids, Levi and Piper. We moved to Monrovia in 2016. In 2020, I went back to school and am now also a Master Certified Health and Wellness Coach. I got more involved and connected with the community in Monrovia once my oldest started elementary school in 2017. It has been really great to get to know people through the school, volunteer work, photo work and coaching. When I am not taking photos or coaching, I enjoy beach time and paddle boarding with my family. On the daily after the kids are off to school and in between work, I look forward to a nice walk, working out and meditation.

Q: Please tell us a little bit about your family.
My husband Joe and I own a digital media company called Rowena Media. We have been fortunate to connect and work with many local small businesses in the community in the last few years. He is also a graphic designer in the TV Industry. We are a very creative family. My son Levi is master lego builder if you ask him, loves his robotics team he and his friends formed last year, and of course Roblox. My daughter is in 1st grade, loves to skateboard, ride her bike and loves anything puppy.

Q: Please tell us about your current, past, or future career. What do you love most about what you do?
I have been a professional photographer since I was 17, so nearly 30 years, and have loved every minute of it. I am also a Master Certified Health coach. Health and wellness is something I have always been passionate about but was too busy raising kids and doing photo work. The pandemic changed all that, and I took the leap to go back to school. It has been really rewarding to add another career and take something else I am so passionate about other than photography and dive into that more. It has also been fun to find the similarities between both careers and the balance of the two. I really just love observing and capturing people in a way they never see themselves, but it is there. I see it with photo and with my coaching. I meet people where they are and go from there. They are both beautiful to witness in a person capturing a moment in time and then witnessing and meeting someone where they are on their health journey and they get their “a ha” moment.

Q: What are a couple of your favorite restaurants in our community?
I love Grey & Cash to meet a friend or client. For family time, we always enjoy Merengue and Viet Phomula.

Q: How long have you lived or worked in our community?
We moved to Monrovia in 2006. However, I have been a photographer in LA since 2005. I have been coming to Monrovia for years doing photo sessions prior to moving here. I just always thought it was the cutest neighborhood.

Q: Who is the most interesting person you’ve met here in our community?
That is a hard question. I have met a good amount of people that really inspire me and make me want to be a better person. Kristin Ritzau owner of FoodEd is one of those people. I met her at my kids’ garden I think two years ago when we went to volunteer. I was one of two people that showed up. It gave me a chance to get to know her and see her vision. She inspires me to take a dream and make it happen. What she has done for our community is remarkable. Dare I say Donna Baker, ok I did. She inspires me with her generosity, selflessness, way to connect with the community and connect with others. I just adore these women and get so happy when I get to chat and connect with them.

Q: If you could travel anywhere in the world right now, where would it be and why?
Taiwan, so my kids can see their grandma and meet other family members.

Q: What is one of your favorite movies? TV shows?
White Lotus on TV.  My favorite movie is Bridesmaids. It always makes me laugh and lifts me up.

Q: What advice would you give to people?
Slow down and take small steps towards your goals. We are living in a world where everything is so instant, we don’t have to be. Take time for self care. It can be as simple as getting 7 hours of sleep or drinking more water. Little changes add up to a healthy balanced lifestyle.

Q: What is something on your bucket list?
To hold a baby Panda

Q: What is your go to band when you can’t decide what to listen to?
Future Islands

Q: What current or former local business makes you the most nostalgic about our community?
The Library, because I loved taking my kids there for books and events. Also, I miss the movie theatre before the pandemic, Those $5 days were the best!

Q: If you could choose anyone that is alive today and not a relative, with whom would you love to have lunch? Why? And where locally would y’all meet for this lunch?
I would choose my friend Brooke VanNatta that is living in Florida. She was a roommate of mine years ago that is like a sister to me. I have not seen her in real life in six years but we still talk often. We would go for a hike and then have lunch at Grey & Cash.

Q: What is your favorite thing about Monrovia or something unique about our community that you like?
My favorite thing is the Mandarin Dual Immersion Program at my kids’ school, Plymouth Elementary. I feel so grateful that my kids have the opportunity to learn Mandarin. I could not have hoped for a better school for them. The families and teachers are just all so lovely. I also love Old Town Monrovia and the small town feel it has. To walk up and down the street and run into people I know is just such a great feeling.

Q: What is your greatest regret?
I hesitate to say I have any regrets because I have learned with everything in life there is lesson. Even if it’s an uncomfortable one, it pushes me in a direction better suited for me in the long run.

Q: Even for friends or family, what is something interesting that most people don’t know about you?
A local fun fact is; We are the Simpson Family 2021 at the old town Halloween event and then walked in the Holiday Parade, as well. My fav fun fact/memory is that I am a HUGE Johnny Cash fan. When I was 19, I bought a ticket to his show and was the youngest person in the audience. I made my way up to the front and I looked him in the eyes and he winked at me. Seriously, it was one of the coolest moments of my life besides having my kids, of course.

Q: What is the most beautiful place you have ever been?
Taroko National Park in Taiwan and Yosemite Park.

Q: What do you consider your greatest achievement?
Cliche’, but having my kids. I wanted to be a mom, and I hit the jackpot with my kids.

Q: What would you rate a 10 out of 10?
The seabass at Momo Bistro in Monrovia on Duarte

Q: Who inspires you to be better?
My kids and that little voice in my head that says “keep swimming.”

Q: What is one or two of your favorite smells?
Jasmine and Rose

Q: Finally, what 3 words or phrases come to mind when you think of the word HOME?
Parents, Husband and Kids

I’m an eternal optimist who sees humor in everything. Also a very fortunate husband and father. We’re proud to call Monrovia our home and raise our son here. I recently completed the Monrovia Area Partnership {MAP} program, and our son, Landon, completed the youth version of the same program. We highly recommend it for those wishing to learn more about the inner-workings of our town and to make a difference. I’ve also attended the Monrovia Business Emergency Response Training {BERT} and found it to be extremely informative.

I was born here in Southern CA and also hold dual-citizenship with the United Kingdom because of my British parents. Looking forward to seeing you around town!

Q: Please tell us a little bit about your family.
I have a Beautiful wife, Analia, and a wonderful son, Landon, age 12

Q: Please tell us about your current, past, or future career. What do you love most about what you do?
Current career: Chief Engagement Officer at Arcadia Association of Realtors – we’re not a sales organization, we’re like the AAA Club but for SGV real estate agents providing behind-the-scenes services. I love that our organization has many selfless volunteers to positively further the real estate industry and raise funds for local SGV charities and organizations. Future career: pouring wine at a Central Coast winery!

Q: What are a couple of your favorite restaurants in our community?
Oh wow. That’s impossible! I will say the restaurant that my family misses dearly – it’s Rigo’s Mexican food. They were on the corner of Foothill and Mayflower. Please come back!

Q: How long have you lived or worked in our community?
Proud resident of Monrovia for 21 years.

Q: Who is the most interesting person you’ve met here in our community?
The person who volunteers and donates their time for the benefit of the Monrovia community, of whom there are too many to name!

Q: If you could travel anywhere in the world right now, where would it be and why?
I’d go back in time and invest in real estate!

Q: What is one of your favorite movies? TV shows?
Willy Wonka and The Chocolate Factory – the original Gene Wilder version. TV show? Probably N.Y. P.D. Blue from back in the 90’s. Such great characters and storylines that touched on your emotions.

Q: What advice would you give to people?
Be kind. {By the way, there is a HUGE difference between being kind and being nice!}

Q: What is something on your bucket list?
More international travel.

Q: What is your go to band when you can’t decide what to listen to?
A ’90s-era band called Toad the Wet Sprocket. Going a step further, the lead singer, Glen Phillips, has some great solo music, as well. They were the very fist live gig I took my son to see, and they were also the band that played on our first New Year’s Eve when I was dating my now-wife. Great memories all around! And of course the Beatles deserve a mention, too.

Q: What current or former local business makes you the most nostalgic about our community?
Thinking outside the box, I would have to say the Monrovia City Staff and the many Monrovia-based organizations run by volunteers that form a special partnership and bring wonderful events to the city.

Q: If you could choose anyone that is alive today and not a relative, with whom would you love to have lunch? Why? And where locally would y’all meet for this lunch?
Another loaded question with so many appropriate answers… I am making this choice for my son with the hypothetical presumption I could bring my family with me to lunch. His favorite soccer player, retired now, is someone named Wayne Rooney who played for Manchester United and the English National Team. He’s always wanted to meet him. So it would be Wayne and we’d let him choose the place!

Q: What is your favorite thing about Monrovia or something unique about our community that you like?
My favorite thing about our wonderful town is the enormity of things to do here. Hike the canyon – check. Stroll Old Town – check. Visit a variety of parks – check. Attend outdoor events and festivals – check. Wine and dine – check and check. There truly is something for everyone here.

Q: What is your greatest regret?
Not furthering my stand-up comedy

Q: Even for friends or family, what is something interesting that most people don’t know about you?
I was a Los Angeles Dodger batboy, including the World Series year of 1988. I know I’m cheating with this question because my family and friends already know!

Q: What is the most beautiful place you have ever been?
My wife’s eyes… ; }

Q: What do you consider your greatest achievement?
I believe life is a series of achievements without a culmination of just one. Thus, we we are continually growing and improving.

100%!

Q: Who inspires you to be better?
My wife and son. Everyone and everything else comes after.

Q: What is one or two of your favorite smells?
A robust Australian Shiraz red wine.

Q: Finally, what 3 words or phrases come to mind when you think of the word HOME?
Plate. Fries. Depot. : }

I love Monrovia because the town is family-oriented, and we love our dogs. We are close to the Monrovia Canyons. Old Town Monrovia is a beautiful safe city. The merchants in Monrovia are friendly and ready to service people with a smile. Numerous places to eat, shop and excellent transit system. Plenty of parks. Monrovia is a close-knit city. Schools are good, and we are near everything. We are not too far from the beaches or the deserts. – Jennifer Boone
